You can probably relate. There are days I cannot wait to have a day off. During the week, all the things around the house that need repair, all the projects I would like to do ( that new ceramic tile bathroom floor), and even the novel I’ve been meaning to read, all make their presence known. So I long for that day or two that I can get to them, cross them off my list. But what happens when that day does come, is that I cannot complete the repairs because I don’t have the parts, materials or the tools to do them. I need to go to the hardware store, the rental yard, the paint store, and the book store ( to purchase the "How to Do It" manual) before I can think about doing anything on the list. The problem is that it takes the entire day off to go to all those places. So instead of "wasting" my day off driving all over the county to get all the stuff, I waste the day walking around the house frustrated nothing is going to get done.
The answer to this problem is simple. I know what needs to be done: knowledge, planning and preparation. To achieve anything worthwhile, there has to be a clear goal in mind, a clear plan on how to achieve it, and the knowledge, tools, and supplies (beforehand) to obtain it or complete it. This is right out of the textbook, and can be applied to all areas of life, including the spiritual.
The Christian is to go through life with eternity in view. Our lives are not purposed for the present but to be in fellowship with our God forever. If that is our goal, it, too, requires knowledge, planning, and preparedness. We can’t expect to come to that final day here on earth and say, "Oh, it’s time to think about eternity". We are to be constantly proactive in our daily lives to become continually more God-like. Paul wrote to Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:8,
"For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come."
Would you be Godly? Then says the Lord in 1st Timothy 4:7,
"Discipline yourselves for the purpose of godliness."
Discipline yourself! That is the way, and there is no other. There are no shortcuts to godliness. There is no place for extemporaneous living when it comes to the pursuit for godliness. I love the words penned by evangelist John Guest :
"Discipline" has become a dirty word in our culture. I know I am speaking heresy in many circles, but spontaneity is greatly overvalued. The "spontaneous" person who shrugs off the need for discipline is like the farmer who went out to gather eggs. As he walked across the farmyard toward the hen house, he noticed the pump was leaking. So he stopped to fix it. It needed a new washer, so he set off to the barn to get one. But on the way he saw the hay loft needed straightening, so he went to fetch the pitchfork. Hanging next to the pitchfork was a broom with a broken handle. "I must make a note to myself to buy a broom handle the next time I get to town," he thought. By now it is clear that the farmer is not going to get his eggs gathered, nor is he likely to accomplish anything else he sets out to do. He is, if anything, a prisoner to his unbridled spontaneity. The fact of the matter is that discipline is the only way to freedom; it is the necessary context for spontaneity."
--Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life By Donald Whitney
We have spent several weeks looking at the "Victorious Christian Life ". The practical part of victorious living is a disciplined life. For the next several weeks we will be looking specifically at the "spiritual disciplines ". If we are to model our lives after Jesus Christ, it is essential to understand just how He lived; what he physically and spiritually did in his daily life. Those specific things he did are the spiritual disciplines.
Be ready to embark on an extremely practical look at Christ-like Christian living.
