More Than We Think

by Pastor Dan Bailey

Weekly I take a walk through the new church building. I try to do this in the late afternoon after all the workers have packed up for the day and silence has displaced the noise of ripping saws and air hammers. Each week the building has notable changes: studded frames turning into walls, hallways and rooms becoming definable, floor plans becoming recognizable, the hundred plus scripture verses etched on the door headers and studs by the Mobile Baptist Builders are disappearing from sight as the wallboard covers them up. I have taken digital photographs of the verses placed over the pastor’s office reminding the inhabitant to "be ready in season and out of season" and to remember that "all scripture is profitable for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness." It’s a wonderful and most peaceful walk every week.

As I walk through the unfinished building, I cannot help but contemplate things that appointed shepherds might ponder when leading sheep in a new pasture. Several questions linger in my mind week after week: How will this beautiful new building best be used for the glory of our Lord? How is the best way to use this incredible tool that God is giving us to further the gospel into a lost world? What kind of "diet" will and should the sheep receive in this pasture? The Apostle Paul wrote to young Timothy saying: I am writing you these instructions so that if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household.

That’s another good question! How are we all to come together in this new building and conduct ourselves in the manner God intends for us? As the questions flow through my mind week after week I sometimes feel overwhelmed. There are more questions than time and human energy can deal with. I throw out these questions so that you can start feeling a little overwhelmed also! I have learned that when the task seems ominous and beyond my power or ability to tend, I’m lead to a greater source of power than myself.

I am continuously reminded that the answers to these questions do not rely on human effort and ingenuity. I am so thankful for that! After one of my late afternoon walks through the building I nestled in to Ephesians chapter 3: 20-21, encouraging words from the master shepherd Paul. Speaking to the "saints of the church at Ephesus", Paul delivers this doxology as a glorious conclusion to a prayer he prays for the church:

"Now to Him, who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen."

Did you catch that? God is able to do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine, according to His power! John R.W. Stott has neatly charted seven incredible statements from this passage:

1. God is able to do or work , for He is neither idle, nor inactive, nor dead.

2. God is able to do what we ask for He hears and answers prayer.

3. God is able to do what we ask or think, for He reads our thoughts, and sometimes we imagine things for which we dare not and therefore do not ask.

4. He is able to do all we ask or think, for He knows it all and can perform it all.

5. He is able to do more than all we ask or think, because His expectations are higher than ours.

6. He is able to do much more than we ask because He does not give His grace by calculated measure.

7. He is able to do very much more, far more abundantly, than all we ask or think because He is a God of super-abundance.

We can contemplate overwhelming questions for the fact that our God has an infinite ability to work beyond our prayers, thoughts, and dreams by the power at work within us, individually and within us as His people who are the dwelling place of God by His Spirit. What a relief! TO HIM BE THE GLORY FOREVER AND EVER! AMEN.
