Who was the guy that first said, "the lazy days of summer?" He obviously hasn’t seen Trinity’s schedule for this month. There’s no time to be lazy. By the time you receive this newsletter, we will be on the verge of what I see as the most aggressive building week in Moscow’s history. The Baptist Builders will have started to arrive and the walls will be going up. Our entire church will be employed as support for these 140 plus men and women who have converged on the building site, donating their time, money and energy to help us raise the church buildings. It has been an incredible idea to anticipate; now it is becoming reality.
A week or so of normal activity will be followed by forty-plus youth and several of our adults going to Mexico for an ambitious mission trip. This will be the first time in Trinity’s history that its youth have set out on such a ministry. They will be divided up into three teams. One team will build a complete house for a Mexican family. Another team will be at the orphanage Casa Hogar Belen, helping in their daily operations. The third group will be at City of Angels, another orphanage. Several will be visiting and ministering at homes for abused and estranged women and senior citizens. Be prepared for changed lives as our youth (and our adults) return.
It’s an exciting month with all this going on in addition to our regular ongoing activities.
During this busy time, much will be accomplished. It will be exciting to see the educational wings of the church standing above ground. It will be incredible to hear the testimonies of the experiences in Mexico. But, there is always risk when we get busy. We get tired. We can get argumentative. When the pressure rises, tempers and patience are tested. When we get busy, we can loose sight of the goal; to glorify our Lord and Savior in all that we do.
My favorite motion picture is one I saw when I was five years old. I don’t think I remember it from that viewing, but I have seen it many times since. The movie is The Bridge Over the River Kwai, a must see. The lead character, Colonel Nicholson, is a prisoner of war in Burma who leads his men to build a bridge for his Japanese captors. Nicholson is an officer of high integrity, dedicated to excellence, a great leader of men and thus well trained to complete any mission that he is given. He builds a beautiful bridge. By the film’s end, he finds himself in the painful position of defending the bridge from attack by fellow officers who want to destroy it to prevent Japanese trains from using it.
There’s a chilling moment of realization, right before he detonates the bridge, when Nicholson (Alec Guinness) utters the famous line, "What have I done?" He was so focused on his goal "building the bridge" that he forgot the larger mission of winning the war. This is a perfect word of caution for us. Let us not get so wrapped up in our busyness, our projects, that we forget what our goal is. Scripture is such a great source for wisdom in times like this.
"May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." (Romans 15:5-6)
Let us not loose focus this month of why we are doing what we are doing. Let us rely on God for endurance through this ambitious and exciting month. Let us strive for unity with each other. Let us glorify our Lord Jesus Christ in all our activity.
